Using the true definition of ‘Barn Find’, we are delighted to offer to market this unicorn of Series 2 Land Rovers. Remarkably, when we discovered this example it was in the barn of the original and only owner, making it such a rarity. Originally Grey with white hard top, the majority of the paint has literally worn away, leaving the car with an authentic bare aluminium shell in places with great patina. This however has revealed just how solid this 88 is, both in the body and underside. The cabin too presents as totally original, and even the jack and tools under the passenger outer seat are present!
Inspired by the World War II Jeep, it was the first mass-produced civilian 4-wheel-drive car with doors, and an available hard roof. Unlike conventional cars and trucks of the time, it used a sturdy fully box-welded frame. Furthermore, due to post-war steel shortage, and aluminium surplus, Land Rovers received non-rusting aluminium alloy bodies, favouring their longevity which certainly has contributed to this one still being around and driving. In 1992, Land Rover claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had built were still in use.
Powered by the 2250cc Petrol 4 Cylinder motor, she starts on the button every time, with just a touch of choke, and drives great for a car that is 66 years old. With a first registration date of 30th November 1959 this is a very early example of the Series 2.
Notable features are the dial vent openers, only present on very early Series II cars, and the indicators mounted on the hard top sides. What would you do with it? Well, it would make a great restoration starting point given the 1 owner and low mileage. I personally would simply fully service, some weekend work, a good clean, and a clearcoat to preserve it as it is. Find another!
