Launched in 1989, the R129 was the fourth generation of the SL-Class, and it was a marked departure from the R107 that had run for so many years before. More modern, more lavishly equipped, it thrust the SL formula into a new era. The crisp styling has aged extremely well today too, the Bruno Sacco-penned lines heralded a significant change in design direction from the 1970s styling of its predecessor, ensuring that the R129 remained in production for over a decade while appearing smartly contemporary throughout.
It was also a real technological powerhouse with self-lowering active suspension on some models, and all manner of safety systems – the most recognisable being the active pop-up roll bars. Significantly stiffer than a hardtop-equipped R107, it was wider, longer, safer and plusher, and the successful formula proved to be a substantial seller; three distinct generations of R129 were offered over its lifespan.
